How to Make Graduating without a Job an Amazing Thing
53% of students are graduating without a job or are underemployed.
Let’s think about that for a second. That means that a majority of the people that walk across that stage do not have a job lined up. Well, when you put it in perspective, it all makes sense.
Still, this stat may not make you feel as good about yourself as you may have wanted. You feel as though all of your friends have accepted their dream job at their dream company and you feel left out. And by now, you are probably sick of everyone asking you…
“So you’ve graduated, what’s next?”
You politely smile and say some BS about how you’re going to start on that job search. Little does anyone know, you really just want to sarcastically scream back…
“I HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA AUNT CAROL!!!”
Before we go any further, I want to say something very important. No, you might not have an amazing job offer at the moment, but it does not mean that you will never get one. Even though it may feel like it…
the last few months of college do not set the tone for your future.
What you will soon realize is that this time off is great for many reasons. It gives you time to just chill. Remember, you have been in school for almost 18 years of your life. You deserve a little bit of time off for yourself. This does not mean just laying on the couch and yelling at your parents though.
You have to use this time wisely. This will be one of the only times in your life you will have time to just focus on yourself. Use this time to set your goals and figure out what the next step in your life will be. Whether it be choosing to go back to school or moving into a career, you need to think critically about what your next step in life is. Here are some examples of things that you should be doing with all that free-time:
- Fixing up that resume
- Enhancing your Linkedin profile
- Researching companies that fit with your lifestyle and interests
- Expanding your network
- Scheduling “informational meetings” with companies
Although it may have plenty of time on your hands to binge watch How I Met Your Mother 3 times through, those student loan payments won’t wait up for you until you get a job. That can be solved by just getting an interim job. Especially over the summer, many restaurants and coffee shops are looking to add seasonal help. Waiting tables, serving coffee, or scooping ice-cream are great options for this interim time. Although you may seem uneasy about it, people do not look down upon these positions. This is especially so in the work environment. During these jobs you were will learn very valuable skills that will translate into any career. Some examples are teamwork, problem-solving, and to be honest…just learning how to deal with really difficult people. What’s great is that…
Companies love seeing these skills on a resume!
So, to all those people that feel that they aren’t good enough because they don’t have a job yet. Be patient, the opportunity is right around the corner.
